A very important facilitation strategy is: STEALTH!  That's right.  It's doing it without other people knowing you're doing it.  This is a very good strategy when you don't have power in a group or team---where you're neither an official Facilitator nor Team Leader.  How can you do this?  Volunteer to take notes...thus in a position to ask pointed, polite Questions: "Did you mean _________ by your comment?"  "To summarize for my notes, then, are you all saying that we need to 1) _____ , 2) _____, 3) _______ ?  And, whether or not the note-taker, it's always appropriate to ask polite questions: "George, did you really mean ______ ?"  Or "That's an intereting idea.  If we actually tried to do it, what would be the first steps?"  etc.  Also, one's good example of being polite and respectful in an otherwise hostile environment might calm others and promote meaningful discussion.
