People are like Porcupines

Porcupines have long sharp quills that protect their bodies.  When they get too close, they can stick each other.  Same with people.  We may think we're very congevial, friendly, and accomodating---until we get too close and our invisible quills jab into each other.  Facilitators help us to lay down those quills, to cover the sharp points, and to "get along" working closely together in small and large groups.  It's not an amazing, stunning, horrible dissaster when we prick each other painfully by being too close in a working group.  It's quite natural.  Rather than getting mad and stomping away, realize that expert facilitation can smooth things over such that we can get close enough to achieve synergy---where we're more productive together than we can be separately.  That's worth looking to expert facilitation for structure, rules, and techniques to govern our close interactions.
